⏰ 10-Minute Guided Micro Prose Writing Session #26

Writing something new vs. revising something old

Thanks to everyone else who wrote live with me today (in an inadvertent double header), and for your patience as I shift to recording on the desktop app for our Live. The above video is for the second Live only, but both prompts and bonus content are below for paid subscribers.

If you joined us, you wrote. If you’re watching the replay, you’re about to write. And that is what this is all about.

In today’s post-writing session, I review why using my Table of Contents (TOC) template is helpful when you’re writing micro (template is free below), the benefit of writing new pieces vs revising existing pieces when you’re starting out with micro, how to identify what your writing is about (in answer to “where is my work going/what does it mean?”), and paying attention to what’s showing up on the page for you.

“It’s not about what you can write, it’s about why you want to write it and why now.”
Darien Gee

When are the Live Writing Sessions?

Free and paid subscribers receive notifications when I’m live on Substack. I also post upcoming sessions in the weekly Micro Monday post. If you see a scheduled reminder, click “I’m Interested” and you’ll be notified when we begin.

Note: I have been having scheduling issues with Substack for the past two weeks. When in doubt, always rely on the posted times in the newsletter.

The weekly live sessions are always free. Don’t worry if you join late—even two minutes of focused writing is valuable. Trust the process and your timing. Remember, we always add titles last, so they can do some heavy lifting regardless of when you join.

“Don’t be critical of your work, especially early work. Be curious instead."
Darien Gee

How the 10-Minute Sessions Work

  • Quick and focused. Drop in at the start (top of the hour) and leave right after—just 10 minutes out of your day

  • I arrive 5 minutes early to welcome you and say hello; I stay 5-10 minutes after for questions and a brief craft talk or check-in

  • We start promptly at the top of the hour with a countdown timer on screen

  • ⤓ Download the Live Writing Session Table of Contents template to help track your work (free for all subscribers).

Latecomers are always welcome—just start writing. The prompt will be on screen along with the countdown timer. Even if you show up with two minutes left, you will have something. Trust your timing and make those two minutes count.

Today’s prompt begins at 3:47
Today’s post-session talk begins at 15:55
